Indoor Herb Garden - An Introduction

If you love fresh herbs then there isn't anything quite as awesome as having your very own herb garden. Often times that is made difficult because you may not have the space for it. Perhaps you live in a house with little gardening area, or you live in a condo or apartment where you simply don't have outdoor garden space. You may also live in an area of the world (and this is true if you are trying to grow a large variety) where you can't grow what you want to grow easily. These are all perfect times to think about an indoor herb garden. This is a fantastic solution to have your very own custom herb garden. On top of that, if you love cooking, it adds a layer of satisfaction - you grew your own herbs! There are a few key areas that need to be considered while building up your own indoor garden. You need to consider light - herbs that use artificial light actually need a lot more light each day than plants which get natural light (sometimes 3x as much light is needed!). Temperature needs to be considered as well - fortunately the plants are indoors, so it is quite a lot easier to manage temperature. Air circulation is something a lot of people don't consider - proper airflow can help keep bacteria and pests away. Soil for indoor growing needs to be light and have a lot of drainage - indoor plants also need careful watering attention, as you don't want to roots sitting in water. Last but not least, one must be careful about pests. Herbs certainly do not grab pest attention as much as vegetables or flowers, but the artificial and indoor conditions can increase pest problems with plants.I made an indoor herb garden for the purposes of cooking. Among other things I absolutely love fresh basil and fresh garlic. The best part about growing herbs indoors is that you can do this regardless of what part of the world you live in, any time of the year - so long as you can create a controlled environment. You too can grow an indoor garden to match your culinary desires! Or perhaps you want to cultivate your own tea garden? Or maybe you have medicinal interests? There are many different choices. Those are just a few introductory areas to consider when building your own indoor herb garden - but don't let it all look to difficult! Having your own indoor garden can be very rewarding, and certainly if you like to cook, the benefits really outweigh the challenges.

I have been growing herbs indoors for years. Having fresh herbs to cook with is not only delicious but rewarding, in that I get the satisfaction of having grown what I am eating. I have decided to share my knowledge and experience at my blog Indoor Herb Garden.
